Sigerslev Kridtbrud is one of the more accessible places at Stevns - compared to the otherwise high cliffs down to the coast. And at the same time one of the most spectacular, as the chalk formations are most pronounced here. The difference between chalk and lime is that chalk contains more than 90% calcite, or lime spar. The term lime is used for deposits with less calcite. Chalk was formed during the Cretaceous period for approx. 100-65 million years ago. These are the remains of shields from single-celled, microscopic calcareous algae, also called coccoliths.
